Friends University will present the Fall Ballet, an evening of tradition and transformation. The performance will take place Friday, Oct. 19, and Saturday, Oct. 20, at 7:30 p.m. and Sunday, Oct. 21, at 2 p.m. in Sebits Auditorium in the Riney Fine Arts Center. “You will be a witness of dance works that depart from tradition, but that have sprung from a genuine expression of current personal relevance,” said Andrea Vazquez-Aguirre director of ballet and visiting lecturer of dance. Guest choreographer Kathryn Alter created a collaborative piece inspired by the dancers. She is a longtime member of the Límon Dance Company in New York and is now steward of the tradition of the technique and repertoire. The performance will also include a suite from Tchaikovsky’s The Sleeping Beauty, and a solo piece from senior Shelby Fox. This will be Andrea Vazquez-Aguirre’s first performance at the university. Ticket prices for the Fall Ballet are $16 for adults and $13 for students and seniors (60-plus). The Sommelier Smack-Down and VIP’s Experience is a wine pairing competition that will take place on Oct 21st, 2018 in Wichita Kansas. Six Sommelier’s will compete to pair a red and white wine with dishes prepared by Chefs from three of the best restaurants in Wichita including Chester's Chop House and two other locals. There will be a total of 15 pairings from 6 Sommeliers, 4 Chefs, 8 dishes, 14 wines. This event will have great energy in the room. All proceeds to benefit Guadalupe Clinic. Your contribution will provide quality healthcare for people without medical insurance.

Lawrence Yun, Ph.D. National Association of Realtors® Chief Economist and Senior Vice President of Research

Dr. Stan Longhofer, Wichita State University Center for Real Estate Professor and Director of the Stephen L. Clark Chair of Real Estate and Finance.

  Dr. Yun will discuss recent developments in the national and local housing market and how those developments will impact the South Central Kansas region’s economy. Dr. Yun will provide insight into both the national and regional real estate market and the direction of home prices in the next 12 to 24 months. In addition, Dr. Yun will review past housing cycles, our current economic backdrop, and forecast the economy and housing market.

  Dr. Stan Longhofer will provide an overview of the local economy and real estate forecast based on information gathered through annual roundtable discussions with real estate professionals throughout the state.  He will introduce the 2019 Kansas Housing Markets Forecast developed by the WSU Center for Real Estate and provide insight into the direction of our economy and local real estate market in the coming year.

Friends University will host a gallery reception for painter Jim Simpson’s new exhibit titled Hole in the Water. The reception will take place in the Riney Fine Arts Gallery in Riney Fine Arts Center Oct. 26 from 5-7 p.m. “My art starts with the act of soaking up thousands of pieces of color, pattern or unique form,” Simpson said. “This storehouse of inspirational fragments is reflected in my work later. I am driven to create new scenes and new images. An eye for the unique and picturesque merges with a love for rustic and battered things.” The show will be on display until Nov. 24 and is free and open to the public.
